The implementation of the new RCD Espanyol Stadium, on the grounds of 22 acres between Cornella andPrat del Llobregat, have caused the remodeling of an entire area surrounding the city, resulting in an annexed shopping center and park which serves as a communication link between the two buildings and the town of Cornella de Llobregat.
Galet de la Plana development works began in November 2006 from the Partial & Basic Project Plan approved development. With Design and Build system, the RCDE on behalf of the Compensation Board (formed by the RCDE and EMDUCSA) instructed the UTE STADIUM the writing of a complementary project and its development works.
The Development works are divided into two phases:
- One first phase, which ended in January 2008, corresponding to the completion of the deviations and improvements of the rainwater and wastewater collectors which crossed the field to allow the construction of the Stadium and the Mall.
- A second phase, completed in 2010, for the provision of necessary services: electricity, water, gas, telephone to field plots (RCD Stadium, Shopping Mall, Office, Hotel, Golf Cornella) as well as paving, lighting and landscaping of public spaces. Furthermore, it provided the project and whole municipality of Cornella with a new link to the coastal belt, a structure for rainwater collection and other services that currently cross the field, such as an irrigation and high-pressure gas channeling system.
- The development works ended with the Mall and the implementation link from A2.
Scope, Challenges and Accomplished Objectives
- Construction Management included the following:
- Full Private sector Urbanization.
- A2 motorway junction through an elevated roundabout and a viaduct (the latter also executed by Plana del Galet).
- Electrical connection from Hospitalet de Llobregat to supply the area.
- A number of external loads such as the Cornella Football Field perimeter urbanization, Abad Oliva school improvements, the transfer of the municipal nursery, etc.
- One of the major difficulties involved the implementation of the works was the management and coordination of all external and concurrent work in the sector to achieve the main objective of opening the RCDE venue (August 2, 2009) and SPLAU Shopping Centre, ensuring the necessary safety, accessibility and mobility.
